Msida Bastion Historic Garden
Floriana, Malta
2022
Msida Bastion Historic Garden occupies a layered site within Malta’s defensive fortifications, incorporating elements of military architecture, a historic burial ground, and a former public garden. Over time, the space served multiple civic roles, functioning as a place of defence, remembrance, and quiet recreation overlooking the harbour.
In recent years, the site has begun to receive renewed attention. Sections of the garden have been cleared, and portions of the original flagstone pathways have been partially reassembled, signalling a shift from neglect toward preservation. These interventions sit alongside older traces: fortification walls, grave markers, worn steps, and areas where vegetation and decay still dominate.
This documentation records the garden during this transitional moment, a space neither fully restored nor abandoned. The photos act as a visual record of a historic site in the process of being re-acknowledged, where past function and present care coexist.
