Ħal Ferħ Complex
Golden Sands, Malta
2017 - 2023
The site known today as Ħal Ferħ in Malta carries a multilayered history. Originally part of a British military camp and barracks, it was later developed in the 1970s and 1980s into the Ħal Ferħ holiday complex, reusing military structures for tourist accommodation. Following the departure of British forces, the complex operated for years as a holiday resort and hostel style facility but gradually fell into disuse and decay by the mid 1990s.
Over time the site remained largely unused, with multiple redevelopment proposals put forward but never realised. In recent years, preparatory works and partial demolition of derelict buildings have been undertaken as part of a broader redevelopment initiative. Current plans envisage a low density resort on the site, anchored by a luxury hotel with attached serviced villas. The design focuses on limiting visual impact through landscaping and keeping building heights low while retaining tourism as the principal use.
This documentation, photographed between 2018 and 2023, captures Ħal Ferħ in this transitional state: industrial and barracks era structures, remnants of the holiday complex layout, and visible traces of abandonment and dismantling. Shot on monochrome 35 millimeter film, the series emphasises structure, texture, light, and shadow, presenting a careful visual record of a site caught between past use and future transformation.
